Myofunctional Therapy is the process of assessing and treating muscular dysfunction, or Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), within the face and mouth. Treatment involves a combination of physical therapy and therapeutic exercises to help support positive orofacial growth and development.
Some of the OMDs being treated with Myofunctional Therapy include mouth breathing, open mouth posture, tongue thrusts, thumb sucking or pacifier dependance, as well as swallow and chewing problems.
The main objectives of Myofunctional Therapy include correct tongue positioning and building tongue strength, jaw stability, correct swallowing, chewing and speech function.
Additional benefits include addressing sleep disordered breathing and avoiding extensive orthodontic work in adult dentition.
